I am well is the correct terminology if somebody were to ask how are you. I am well is actually confusing because in English "well" is a filler word in some cases. So for example when you don't know what to say some say "well...I'm not sure" so to say "I am well" would already set a negative tone. I am good just means you are well, you don't need to say I am well. Hope that makes sense!
Both are correct however "I am well" sounds more formal than I am good.
It is incorrect to say "I am well." Because the verb "am" is not an action verb; it is a state verb, and state verbs are not followed by adverbs; they are followed by adjectives. So the only correct way to say it is "I am good."
''i am well'' is the correct one though as natives we just use both of them.
Both are correct depending on the formality of the conversation.
