Throughout my experience teaching English as a second language, I have come to realize that it is better to learn English in groups when you teach in person. However, it is better to conduct individual classes when you teach online. 

The environment also helps to boast the students confidence and self-esteem

It depends on the students and the purpose of learning English. 

Learning in a group helps aid in understanding because you can give out a task to the students for it to be done amongst themselves by so doing  understanding is made easy for each of then 

It totally depends on the students, the class environment, and the teacher.

Ultimately, the most conducive learning environment for learning and understanding English depends on the individual's learning styles , preferences and needs. Some learners may benefit more from groups , while others may prefer and individual environment.
