Hunky-dory" means "just fine, all OK, satisfactory".  Everything was going hunky-dory until your friends showed up. Meaning the it was all okay until your friend showed up.

the normal spelling is "hunky-dory" and it means satisfactory, first-rate, excellent. It was coined in the mid 19th century in the US.

It is an idiom, but is usually used seriously or jokingly in an answer if people ask  you-
Question - "How are things with you?"; "How's it going?"; "How are you?"
Happy or Serious Answer- " Oh, everything is hunky-dory!"
Question - "How are you doing?" 
Cynical ( Intonation is important) Answer- "Oh, everything is hunky-dory!" or
"Definitely NOT hunky-dory!"
