Patience and empathy, knowledge and experience, all of these are important qualities in a good teacher. The most important quality, however (in my opinion), is the ability to ask leading questions. Think of us as journalists, interviewing the students. We want to know how much English they know, what their strengths and weaknesses are, and who they are. Asking leading questions is a good tool for assessing students with only a minimum of speaking by the teacher. It also makes the students feel that they're being listened to and it boosts their confidence and their feeling of being involved in the lesson.

A teacher has to be understanding, patient and kind. It has to be someone who can really improve someone’s communication skills and make them speak english with confidence.

It is often believed that less is more and more is less but I will say it totally depends on the tutor and student relationship to a certain degree; because once there is understanding between the two, the tutor will be focused on helping students meet their goals even for less. But tutors with cheap lessons has it as a strategy to gain and retain more students, which is good.
