I find that students open up more and engage in the lesson enthusiastically when they are talking something they are familiar with, especially about themselves. I always try to make the lesson as personal as I possibly can. I also try to open up about myself so that they do not feel like it's an interrogation. 🌻

To engage students, make sure that your teaching method is interesting, fun and relaxed. Use a very fun materials to keep your students interested and like to have a lesson with you.
Intrinsic motivation is the best when possible. Sometimes extrinsic is necessary though.
Activating their both extrinsic and intrinsic motivation through reward and other means of positive reinforcement. By this, students will be more interested in your class. Stimulating their courageous self to do more about their academe. This is accord to the learning theory of Pavlov and Skinner-the operant and conditioning Approach. In addition, one of the best way to engage your students in a class discussion is this what we called Learning by Doing by John Dewey. This will lead students to master their learning. I believe that learning by doing like hands-on activities could really help students to retain their learnings from shorter term memory into a long term memory.
Social engagement is a good way to engage your students. Help students get to know and trust you. Today's students are more engaged in learning that applies to the real world. A good example is to use music, videos and proper literature that will help them to understand real life. Another example whereby they will benefit, is to use vocabulary that will activate their brain. When it comes to changing extrinsic motivation into intrinsic motivation, it is good to give the students a choice. In other words let them decide on a topic that they will enjoy and decide in which way they want to learn from it. For example, they might want to talk about their favourite song by sharing a short video and then elaborate on what they know about that specific artist. Afterwards the teacher can share shortly on the same subject. For homework the student/s can write a short essay on what their thoughts are regarding the teacher's choice of singer and also whether they like or dislike the singer.
