NZ/Australian accents & USA/Canadian accents. Can you tell the difference? Any big differences?

What difference does it make? While having a native-like accent is not a realistic goal for most second-language learners, as it takes many years of immersion and practice to achieve, it is more important to focus on developing clear and accurate pronunciation that allows you to be understood by others. I know that such an answer does not answer your question directly, but one should ask why differences in accent should be a major concern when it comes to learning English.
USA and Canada has a few words pronounced differently. About is one of them. Australia and New Zealand are extremely similar and I have difficulty telling the difference.
