I am always motivating myself first, because when the teacher is motivated the students will fallow.
I am motivating myself first. And if they are raising their hands to answer your questions always praise them. A little praise can make them motivated.

I also find that giving them a brief explanation about exactly what is about to happen in a lesson puts them at ease

Personalise their lessons. If they are interested in gaming then your text based lesson could be about games. Try to make your guided discovery akin to mystery and finding clues in the midst of some unneeded clues. Reinforce positive classroom environments, make things interesting.

Who is familiar with the idioms "splitting hairs" ? Splitting hairs = to discuss, argue, hang out in the trivial details of something. Imagine if you guys decide to split a strand of hair into small pieces... How relevant would that be? Not at all right? So whenever we discuss about trivial, unimportant matters, we are splitting hairs (over something)
