Hi Angela, that is an interesting question, indeed. First of all, you have to be engaging (being boring is the worst criticism that a tutor can receive). Also you must address the needs of your student and answer all the questions that they present to you. The materials used for the lesson should be clear and tailor-made to the student needs/level of learning. I hope this helps!
Use the 30 minute trial to find out about the student's level, needs and goal. I have a conversation exercise using common verb phrases where the student can fill in the missing verbs ( if they are not a complete beginner).

Being able to connect with the student is the first stage and then you need to ask them some questions so it is easier for you to check their level. I always ask for their ideas on how to proceed the session.
